Planning a wedding is no easy task. Most people only do it once in their lifetime (or at least that’s the plan), and so it’s not something you tend to get a lot of practice in. This is why many people choose to use the expertise of a wedding planner but if that’s not for you then we have a solution. Here is a practical checklist to follow with the 5 most important things you need to do and when.
Keep in mind of course that every wedding is as different as the couple getting married and there are no hard rules, you can plan a wedding in 7 days if you’re not too particular but if you have a vision that you want to make a reality then ideally you need to give yourself approximately 14 months.
Here it goes…
Knowing where you are going to tie the knot determines so many of the subsequent choices. Some venues are booked in advance more than 14 months so be aware that if you want a sought-after place you plan well in advance. This is especially important if you want a separate venue for the ceremony and the reception as they need to be free on the same day. Once you have the date and place secured you can continue to make other plans and book vendors.
When you hire a photographer you are entrusting them to capture the most important day of your life. You want to make sure that the person you hire is experienced, professional and has the highest quality equipment. They also need to be fully insured. On another note it’s beneficial to have had the time before the big day to get to know your photographer and for them to get to know you. It’s a very personal service and it helps if you feel relaxed in their presence so that they can capture you and your new spouse at your best. Ideally you should also visit the venue together so that they can get on board with your vision and be fully prepared to capture it. A good photographer will be very busy so you need to leave plenty of time to book in advance, at least 6 months but in some cases, if you have a popular date, up to 2 years.
Some brides are happy with an off-the-shelf wedding dress but many want a made-to-measure unique gown. This takes time and the expertise of a skilled dressmaker. To make sure that this process isn’t rushed and you feel like the most beautiful bride on your big day, give this process at least 12 months.
Some venues particularly hotels, will include catering as part of the hire cost. If your deal does not have this service then it’s important that you make it a priority after all we all know your guests will expect feeding! The standard advice is to make sure you give this process at least 6 months.
If a DJ or entertainer is available next weekend then be prepared that they probably won’t provide the level of service you desire. A good wedding DJ will be booked up in advance. You need to make sure that the company you hire is fully insured has the right equipment and meets safety regulations. They also need to have the right music for you and your guests so it’s valuable to allow plenty of time before the big day to discuss musical preferences. Ideally plan to book your DJ or entertainer at least six months in advance.
